Two best friends have fanatically supported the Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa event over the years. One evening, while watching an athlete with a broken collar bone, they were again discussing the incredible stories of endurance and hope over coffee. An idea started taking shape and was pitched to Ironman South Africa. Never in their wildest dreams did they think that anyone would share their excitement and encourage them to pursue their dream. Dividing responsibility came naturally as Marietjie was well versed in Research methodology, having obtained her PHD. Elzabe, who also professionally proof reads for Masters students at university, took on the role of Main Writer of The Heart of an Ironman, South Africa. They say, "We have met the most incredible people on this journey and will always be eternally grateful to our families and all those who believed in us and supported us."
Elzabe Boshoff is a qualified PADI and NAUI Scuba Diving/Openwater Instructor and General Manager of Ocean Divers International, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. As a business woman in Port Elizabeth, she has made great strides in the tourism industry and is passionate about running one of the best open water diving schools in South Africa. She is also passionate about Port Elizabeth and the Eastern Cape.
Dr Marietjie van der Merwe is a qualified Social Worker and obtained her PHD in Social Work in 2006. Marietjie is the Head of ACVV Khayalethu Youth Centre/Oliver House, a home for the reformation and reintegration of former street children in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Marietjie was chosen as the Pick & Pay, Algoa FM Woman of Distinction in 2007/2008, where she was honoured for the work she does and a finalist in the Business Woman’s Association the following year.
