Poems from a Homeland

Follow the Sun

If there is a poem

Sitting here

In my chest

May it irrigate

Populate

Intention

If there is a story

Let it wander

Through this being

Emerge into the land

Seeing

Let the water flow

Rush like blood

A great flood eternal

Journal the passage

The passing

Hold and fasten

Brace yourself

With faith

Do not loosen the grip

Or slip

Into the ravaging words

Of disbelievers

Do not believe

In invasion

Through persuasion

Politic rhetoric

Is warfare

Declare faith

In the old ones

Do not come undone

Follow the sun

Wander deserts

Swim the river

Deliver yourself

Take survivors

With you

Have integrity

Without brevity

It is a long road

But we walked from the top

To the end

Then back again

Ceremonial style

Keep Songlines alive

Sing in circles

Circle all beginning

No end

Defend your body

Like nobody else

Walk in sovereignty

Soles upon the land

Stand like the old people

The steeple, the tree

Worship the divine

If there is a poem sitting here

May it wander the land like a story

Shed light into this silence

Shatter this violence

Let our homes be filled with the light and hope

Of every yesteryear
